now I have my very own computer crash helmet…
So our weekend was pretty low-key. It pretty much consisted of a little shopping and a ton of television! On Friday evening after work, Jay and I attempted (with no luck!) to acquire a couple of accessories to make our bike riding more enjoyable. We went out for dinner and then drove out to Cycle Gear only to find that we were too late. The store was already closed, so we had to come back on Saturday morning. But when we did, Jay got a cool grey jacket and I got a new (computer) helmet.
Actually, I got my helmet at a different cycle shop (A.J. Foyt Cycles), but anyway let me tell you, I am in love with that helmet. It makes riding totally awesome. It was always fun, but with a full face helmet, riding is much quieter and way less windy!

On Saturday afternoon, we went to the Crawfish Festival in map(Old Town Spring|spring, texas). We rode the bike up there so I could try out my awesome new helmet. We got there kind of late, so we didn’t actually go into the fairgrounds, but we did walk around the main street a bit. I didn’t partake of any mudbugs myself, but Jay and I did try an unlikely dish—deep fried Oreos. Yes…I think you haven’t really experienced true festival fare until you’ve tasted some unexpected fried item. We could choose from among Oreos, Nutterbutters, Chips Ahoy cookies, Twinkies! And let me tell you…the experience is beyond description. I guess there is nothing quite like the taste of an Oreo that has just melted from being submerged in vegetable oil heated to a piping 400 degrees. Let’s just say I was curious to try the freakish treat, but I don’t think it is on my new favorites list.
On Saturday evening, we watched our regular shows as well as the eighties classic, imdb(Coming to America). I have to admit that the first time I watched this movie, I didn’t realize that Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy played lots of different characters. Ya, what can I say…I’m a little slow sometimes, but in my defense, I will say that I was only nine when I first saw this movie! And it’s still great! On Sunday, our slothful spree continued as we laid around and watched the Food Network pretty much all day. Yes…Jay made the ultimate sacrifice. He watched cooking shows with me all day and didn’t complain about it once. I love this man! Here is our favorite recipe of the day. I can’t wait to make these…
Chocolate Truffles
- 1/2 pound bittersweet chocolate
- 1/2 pound semisweet chocolate
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon prepared coffee
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- powdered sugar
- Cocoa powder
- Chop the chocolates finely with a sharp knife. Place them in a heat-proof mixing bowl.
- Heat the cream in a small saucepan until it just boils. Turn off the heat and allow the cream to sit for 20 seconds. Pour the cream through a fine-meshed sieve into the bowl with chocolate. With a wire whisk, slowly stir the cream and chocolates together until the chocolate is completely melted. Whisk in the coffee and vanilla. Set aside at room temperature for 1 hour.
- With a melon-baller, scoop balls of the chocolate mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes, until firm. Roll each dollop of chocolate in your hands to roughly make a round ball. Roll in powdered sugar, cocoa powder, or both. These will keep refrigerated for weeks, but serve at room temperature.
And on an exciting note, today I told my boss that I am going to start looking for a new job! I work for the Harris County Public Library, and we have a rule that we must tell our supervisors when we apply for new jobs within the library system. Since I am going to finish grad school in August, I could start applying for positions at HCPL now. And today I applied for four jobs—children’s librarian positions at Cypress Creek and North Channel and young adult librarian positions at Cypress Creek and Tomball. So now I just have to wait. Everyone keep their fingers crossed for me!

Thanks Delena! So ya…now is just the wait….that’s always the worst part! But I’ve been preparing for the storytime presentation component of the interview. I’ve opted to read “Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing” It was a hard choice btwn that and the epic tale, “The Very Hungry Caterpiller.”

Our fingers are crossed for you too Gwendolyn. I bet you do like the new helmet. Did you know Jay she liked to never learned to ride a bike? She must have been nine or ten when she did. She was at our house and wiped out a shrub and it still never grew. We love you Grandma and Grandpa
